About Us - The Juneau Lighthouse Association

glassThe Juneau Lighthouse Association was created in 1997 as a result of an opportunity presented by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)to allow non-profits to present proposals to the USCG to safeguard Alaskan lighthouses. Budget cuts severely impacted the Coast Guard’s ability to maintain the unmanned Alaskan lighthouses. The USCG 17th District obtained permission to offer an outlease program to interested non-profits to take over the maintenance and preservation of these structures. This model occurs throughout the nation and is successful in many states. A dedicated non-profit has the potential to raise funds and obtain grant funding. Often the lighthouse structure is a landmark for a community and the non-profit is able to generate local support for the preservation of the recognized historical structure.
